Bible Verses for Hard Times

By the Fig Devotional team · October 30, 2026

When life is heavy, a tidy answer rarely helps. The Bible doesn't offer many. It offers company: people who have been through the valley and wrote down what they found there. Stay with whichever verse you need, for as long as you need.

When your heart is broken

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

Nigh means near. Heartbreak isn't a sign that God has stepped away.

When you're walking through the valley

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Psalm 23:4 (KJV)

The psalm doesn't go around the valley. It walks through it, and the promise is for the walking.

When it feels like too much

“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee”

Isaiah 43:2 (KJV)

The verse says when, not if. Hard times are expected, and so is His company.

When you're pressed on every side

“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (KJV)

Paul doesn't pretend things are fine. He names each hardship, and then names what it hasn't taken from him.

When you can't see the good

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28 (KJV)

This verse doesn't say that all things are good. Please don't let anyone use it to hurry your grief. It's a promise to hold quietly, and it can wait until you're ready.

When the night feels long

“weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”

Psalm 30:5 (KJV)

Scripture allows for the night, and it doesn't rush you out of it.

A short prayer for hard times

Lord, this is heavy, and I don't know how to carry it. I don't need all the answers today. I need You. Stay close to me. Amen.

Please don't go through this alone. A pastor, a friend, a counselor or your doctor can walk with you. If you're thinking about harming yourself, please call or text 988 in the United States right now, or contact your local emergency services.

Common questions

What Bible verse helps during hard times?

Psalm 34:18, Psalm 23:4 and Isaiah 43:2 are three passages many people turn to. Each speaks of God's presence in the middle of trouble.

What does the Bible say about suffering?

The Bible doesn't explain away suffering. It gives space to lament, particularly in the Psalms, and it promises God's presence in the midst of pain.

Does God promise that hard times will end?

Scripture offers hope, and Psalm 30:5 speaks of joy coming in the morning. It doesn't promise when, or that life will be free of pain. It does promise that you aren't alone in it.
